Moku-o-Loko `Eono o ka Moku Hawai`i
The Six Districts of Hawai`i
(Click for more Information)
Waipi`o Valley, named for its curving river, is probably the most famous
site in the district of Hamakua. It was here that Pai`ea Kamehameha was
reared until he was old enough to join the royal court.
Honoka`a is the largest town in Hamakua, and
Laupahoehoe is the second largest.
Hamakua is the home district of Kamapua`a, the
pig god, a diety of fertility and agriculture. It is famous for its
towering sea cliffs, which are an important nesting place for native
birds.
The summit of Mauna Kea, home of the snow
goddess, Poliahu, and her sisters, is in Hamakua. She is an arch-rival
of Pele, whose home is on Mauna Loa. So, please do not make offerings to
Pele at the summit of Mauna Kea!
