The Six Districts of Hawai`i
(Click for more Information)
Volcano, Kea`au, and Pahoa are the most prominant towns in the district of Puna.
Volcano is on the border between Puna and Ka`u.
The Old Mamalahoa Highway runs through it, and it can be reached
by turning mauka from the New Mamalahoa, or Hawai`i Belt Road.
Kea`au, formerly known as Ola`a, is just a few
miles from the Hilo/Puna boundary.
The town of Pahoa is in "Inner Puna"
on the way to Cape Kumukahi.
Puna is famous for growing beautiful orchids
and anthuriums. In the song, Hilo Hanakahi, Puna is extolled for the
wonderful fragrance of its groves of hala trees.
In some hula legends, the
first hula was danced by Hi`iaka and Hopoe in this district.
