Hawai`i - Lehua - Red

There are many different styles of lei lehua, but generally they are made with either the wili, wili poepoe, or kui techniques. The lei may be made with the pua - individual florettes; the kihene - the blossom cluster; the hua - the flower bud; the liko - the leaf bud; or any combination of them.

Hula dancers adorn themselves with lei lehua in honor of Hi`iaka, a patron deity of the hula.

The `ohi`a-lehua is a highly variable tree in both shape and color. Blossoms range from pale cream to deep scarlet. The lehua mamo, described as "The golden Lehua" by the late Nona Beamer, is associated with royalty.
