and related activities 2004 January, 2004 Thursday, January 15 - Young `ukulele virtuoso Brittni Paiva joins Leilehua at the Kope Kope in the Hilo Shopping Center. 4:00-6:00 pm. Saturday, January 17 - Leilehua and Halau Hula Namohala Hala`i provide the evening cultural program at the Onizuka Center For International Astronomy (visitor center on Mauna Kea). Saturday, January 31 - Leilehua demonstrates hula at the Volcano Art Center in conjunction with the Hula Kahiko series. Phone 967-7565 for more information.
2 Saturdays, February 7&14 - Leilehua teaches Hula Mai, an Introduction to Hawaii's Native Dance. This beginning hula intensive workshop covers the role of hula in Hawaiian culture, basic protocols, and hula steps, plus a traditional hula dance. Ages 13 & up. $55 for 2 classes. Leilehua tells stories of this sacred mountain. Saturday, Apr 3 - University of Hawai`i at Hilo Elderhostel program, "A Foot in and a Foot Out - Dynamics of a Symbiotic Relationship with Culture and Science". Kahalelaukoa Ell and Leilehua Yuen discuss the blending of modern science and traditional culture.
