Jan 10 - Premier of Hawai`iana Live: Hilo, My Home Town! Hawai`iana show at Hilo's historic Palace Theater. Leilehua hosts this local's-eye-view of her home town with story-telling, music, and hula. 10:30 am Wednesdays. January's program features the beauty and history of Hilo. Jan 17 - Hawai`iana Live: Hilo, My Home Town! - Wai`Ānuenue, the Rainbow Waters of Hilo. Leilehua, hostess of the weekly Wednesday program at Hilo's historic Palace Theater, pulls out all the stops as she tells the story of how Kuna, a supernatural lizard, courted Hina, the Goddess of Rainbow Falls.  The show also features Bob Alder on the theater's historic pipe organ, and video featurettes by Clay Callaway. January's shows focus on legends and history of Hilo.10:30 am Wednesdays, Palace Theater, 38 Haili St. Hilo.

Jan 24 - Hawai`iana Live: Hilo, My Home Town! - Pele and the Princess Leilehua, hostess of the weekly local's-eye-view of her home town, takes to the Palace Theater stage to tell the story of how Princess Ruth saved the city of Hilo from the lava flow of 1881. Horsewoman, musician, hula dancer, and educator Leina`ala Lassiter joins Leilehua on-stage to talk story about the culture of paniolo. Leina`ala plays paniolo songs on the `ukulele as Leilehua dances hula. Jan 31 - Hawai`iana Live: Hilo, My Home Town! - Hinaikeahi, Goddess of Hāla`i Hill. In this tale of love, sacrifice, and the evil of jealousy, Leilehua tells the story of the hill on which she grew up as she hosts this weekly local's-eye-view of her home town. Feb 7 - Hawai`iana Live: Eh! You Pake? Growing up Chinese in Hilo - Hilo natives Steamy and Lily Chow join Leilehua Yuen as she hosts this weekly local's-eye-view of her home town. The Chows tell about their experiences growing up as members of Hilo's strong Chinese community. Feb 14 - Hawai`iana Live: Eh! You Pake? Growing up Chinese in Hilo - Join Leilehua Yuen in a Double Happiness Special at Hilo's historic Palace Theater as she tells the story of `Ohi`a and Lehua, one of Hawai`i's greatest romances, and prepares for Chinese New Year - Hawaiian style. Leilehua performs her original music, featuring songs of love and family heritage. The show also features Bob Alder on the theater's historic pipe organ, and video featurettes by Clay Callaway. 10:30 am Wednesdays.

Feb 21 - Hawai`iana Live: Hi`ilawe - Leilehua is joined on-stage by Moku Young and TR of the Kuahiwis (and Moemoeā) at the Hilo Palace Theater in this show featuring the famed waterfall Hi`ilawe. Leilehua dances Hi`ilawe for Moku and RT after telling stories of the falls. Feb 28 - Hawai`iana Live: Kamehameha and the Mamalahoa - Leilehua hosts this local's-eye-view of her home town with story-telling, music, and hula. Today she shares the story of the Mamalahoa - in which the last of Hawai`i's great ruling chiefs humbles himself before a commoner, asks forgiveness, and creates the first national law. Mar 7 - Hawai`iana Live: Mo`olelo o nā Lei - `Paia Ala i ka Hala. Leilehua hosts this local's-eye-view of her home town with story-telling, music, and hula. In this month's programs, she tells the stories represented by different lei of Hawai`i. She begins the series with the lei hala, and the story of Hina's gift of fragrance and forgetfulness to a crippled woman. In a special presentation, sisters Jasha and Konane Evans join Leilehua this week. Leilehua met Jasha and her sister at a music workshop at the Pāhala Plantation House. In the evening, Leilehua, her husband Manu, Sonny Lim, and Cyril Pahinui would sit outside under the trees and enjoy some music together. Uncle Cyril heard Jasha playing `ukulele and called her over. "Hui! Baby Robi! Come, play for Uncle! . . . Doesn't she remind you of a young Robi Kahakalau?" he would ask She did, indeed. Mar 8 - Mo`olelo o nā Lei: Lei Workshop - Hilo Palace Theater. Features two related lei styles, the lei hilo and the lei hili. Both lei use a single type of material which is either plaited or twined. Free and open to the public. Some lei-making materials will be available, but participants also are encouraged to bring materials from their own gardens each week so they may learn how to use what they have available. Recommended materials for this week's class are la`i (ti leaves), kauna`oa, any pliable fern fronds, pōhuehue, and other vining plants. Supporting materials are available for purchase. Mar 14 - Hawai`iana Live: Mo`olelo o nā Lei - Pū`ili ana i ka hua `ūlei - In this month's programs, Leilehua Yuen, the Palace Theater's Hostess of Hawai`iana, tells the stories represented by different lei of Hawai`i. This week, Leilehua tells a story in which  love, betrayal, reclamation, and forgiveness are strung together like `ūlei berries in a lei. Moku Young of Nā Kuahiwi joins Leilehua as she hosts this celebration of Hawai`i's iconic emblem with story-telling, music, and hula. Mar 15 - Mo`olelo o nā Lei: Lei Workshop. Hilo Palace Theater. Features two stitched lei styles, the lei kui and the lei humu, or humupapa. Kui is frequently used for such flowers as plumeria and rose, kou, and ilima. Humu is often used to make lei hulu and lei bouganvilla. Free and open to the public. Some lei-making materials will be available, but participants also are encouraged to bring materials from their own gardens each week so they may learn how to use what they have available. Recommended materials for this week's class are plumeria, carnation, rose, pikake, or any other similar flower. Feathers, bouganvilla, and small leaves can be used for the humupapa style. Mar 21 - Hawai`iana Live: Mo`olelo o nā Lei - Hi`iaka, Hopoe, and the Maile Sisters. In this month's programs, Leilehua Yuen, the Palace Theater's Hostess of Hawai`iana, tells the stories represented by different lei of Hawai`i. This week, Leilehua weaves hula ki`i, Hawaiian puppetry, like a lei maile through one story of how the hula was created. The show also features Bob Alder on the theater's historic pipe organ, and video featurettes by Clay Callaway. 10:30 am Wednesdays, Palace Theater, 38 Haili St. Hilo.

Mar 22 - Mo`olelo o nā Lei: Lei Workshop. Hilo Palace Theater. Features two long-petiole lei styles. Both haku and hīpu`u require long pliable material for the best results. Laua`e and lau kukui are commonly used for haku. Kukui, olapa, and other leaves with a long petiole are best for hipu`u. Some lei-making materials will be available, but participants also are encouraged to bring materials from their own gardens each week so they may learn how to use what they have available. Recommended materials for this week's class are laua`e, other pliable ferns, lau kukui, lau hau, lau milo, or any leaf with long petioles. Free and open to the public. Mar 28 - Hawai`iana Live: Mo`olelo o nā Lei - Lei Lehua, Kou Lei Nani. The blossom of the `ohi`a-lehua is woven into many love stories of the islands. A lei is not only a garland of flowers given to a sweetheart. Sometimes it is the sweetheart herself. Kiliona Young, and his father, Moku Young join Leilehua in sharing story-telling, music, and hula which tell stories of Hawai`i's renowned lei. Today, Moku shares a family story which inspired a medley of the songs Hi`ilawe and He`eia. They also perform one of Leilehua's favorite songs of Hilo, Manu `O`o, to which she dances. Mar 29 - Mo`olelo o nā Lei: Lei Workshop. Hilo Palace Theater. Features two vastly different lei styles, lei wili and haku mele. Liko lehua, ferns, and plants with short woody stems are commonly used in lei wili. Students also will be encouraged to haku mele, to write a lei song. Some lei-making materials will be available, but participants also are encouraged to bring materials from their own gardens each week so they may learn how to use what they have available. Students should bring their own notebooks and pens for their haku mele. Free and open to the public. Supporting materials are available for purchase. Class size limited to 20. Mar 30-April 1 - Lei Garden Workshop - Leilehua teaches Mo`olelo o nā Lei workshop on traditional Hawaiian lei. Intensive in history, chant, hula, protocol, ecology, harvesting, creation, and finally disposal of one of Hawai`i's most emblematic and enduring symbols. Apr 4 - Hawai`iana, Live! Nā Wahine Holo Lio - Hawai`iana show at Hilo's historic Palace Theater. Leina`ala Lassiter joins Leilehua in hosting this local's-eye-view of their   home town with story-telling, music, and hula. Learn how the beautiful pa`u riders don their graceful riding attire for parades! Apr 18 - Hawai`iana, Live! I'll Weave a Lei of Stars for You - Mr. AstroDay, aka Gary Fujihara, joins Leilehua on-stage at Hilo's historic Palace Theater. Today's program celebrates the beauty of Hawai`i's starry skies. May 1 - Lei Day!!!! Tuesday. Hawai`i Lei Festival theme for 2007 is Mo`olelo o nā Lei - "Stories of the Lei." The festival takes place at Mo`oheau Band Stand and includes lei display, lei court, hula, and music. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the festivities! May 19 - Mo`olelo o nā Lei: Nature Walk and Lecture. Leilehua Yuen leads a nature walk to see and discuss some of the plants which grow on Mauna Kea. To participate, gather at 2 pm at the Onizuka Visitor Station at the 9,000 foot elevation. At 6 pm, Leilehua presents "Mo`olelo o na Lei," Stories of the Lei, in the VIS lecture room. Leilehua and her husband Manu Josiah share songs and stories of lei, and will demonstrate techniques for some of the major styles of lei, including haku, hili, hilo, hipu`u, humupapa, kui, and wili.

June 5 - Kāhili - Standard of Royalty. Learn to make a traditional kāhili, the feathered standard of Hawaiian royalty. Serving a purpose similar in many respects to that of the heraldic banners of European nobility, these beautiful traditional emblems of rank still fill social and ceremonial roles today. This class is training students in preparation for the annual cultural festival at Pu`uhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park. 6:30 pm at the Big Island Academy of Massage in Hilo. Hālau membership fee is $35 per month to attend all regularly scheduled classes. Non-members pay $15 per class. Phone 935-1722 for more information.

June 6 - Hawai`iana Live: Nā Kamalei. Children are considered the most precious lei. This summer, the keiki of Nā Lei Mohala o Hāla`i take the stage, in an actual on-going demonstration of a hula class. Today, in their very first class, nā kamalei demonstrate the kaholo, the most basic of hula steps. Kiliona and his father MokuYoung teach the children - and their audience - a song about the hala tree. June 30 - July 31 - Pu`uhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park Establishment Day Cultural Festival. Join Leilehua and many of Hawai`i's knowledgable traditional artists, artisans, and cultural practitioners in this two-day festival of Hawaiian arts and culture. The event opens Saturday with the Processional of the Royal Court, and closes Sunday with the Royal Recessional. Learn to craft a kāhili, an ipu heke-ole, and participate in many games and activities. Pu`uhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park.

September 12 - Hawai`iana Live: Hawai`i, Isle of Romance. Leilehua tells a traditional story of Hawai`i. Howard Shapiro and Kamaluhia Wooley join Leilehua on-stage to perform some of Howard's heartfelt and inspiring compositions.
   Maluhia began her studies of hula with Kawaikapuokalani Hewett on O`ahu, and now lives on ka Moku o Keawe, where she continued her hula studies under nā kumu hula Hulali Beamer-Solomon, Ray Fonseca,and Kekuhi Kanahele. She also is a practitioner of lomi-lomi and trained under Beatrice Freitas and Betty Jane Kuliana Yap Lau. She has extended her healing work to continue the traditions of her late hanai mother, la`au lapa`au practitioner Moana Kahele Kamaluhia.
   Howard is well known in Hawai`i for his environmental work and heartfelt songs, as well as his uncounted hours dedicated to the schoolchildren of Hawai`i.
