January 15 - Tara Yoga Center Husband and wife, Manu Josiah and Leilehua Yuen (right), share music, hula, storytelling, and love of their island home. January 16 - Hawai`iana Live: Hānau na Moku! This weeks show tells the story of the birth of the Hawaiian islands in chant, hula, and song. The show also features Bob Alder on the theater's historic pipe organ, and video featurettes by Clay Callaway. In this tale of love, sacrifice, and the evil of jealousy, Leilehua tells the story of the hill on which she grew up as she hosts this weekly local's-eye-view of her home town. April 24 - Leilehua joins Howard Shapiro and Kamaluhia Wooley at the Kahilo Theater in Waimea April 30 - Hawai`iana Live! at the Hilo Palace Theater - "May Day is Lei Day in Hawai`i" Special presentation for Lei Day (May 1). May, the Month of the Lei, 2008 May 1 - Lei Day!!!! Thursday May 1, Hālau o Nā Lei Mohala o Hāla`i hosts their annual Lei Day festival at the Mo`oheau Band Stand in Downtown Hilo. The program includes lei display, lei court, hula, and music. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the festivities! Free and open to the public. Phone 935-1722 for more information and to kokua!
May 7 - Hawai`iana Live! at the Hilo Palace Theater "Mo`olelo o nā Lei" This month's program focuses on the history, beauty, and variety of Hawai`i's lei. The show also features Bob Alder on the theater's historic pipe organ, and video featurettes by Clay Callaway. 11:00 am Wednesdays, Palace Theater, 38 Haili St. Hilo. May 10 - Kumanu in Concert! Leilehua Yuen joins global fusion music group, Kumanu, in this live stage performance in the beautiful Volcano area. Kumanu recently released their debut CD, "Earth Patriot," for which Leilehua provided a chant and some background vocals. Kumanu's work reflects the diverse multi-cultural backgrounds, from Native Hawaiian and Native American to African American, Asian, and European roots of the members. Several well known Hawai‘i-based performing artists comprise Kumanu, including Damon Williams, James McWhinney, Rupert Tripp, Jr., Tioni Tam Sing, Bruce David, Doug Espejo, Adam Kay, Randy Skaggs, Marsha Hee, Kamaluhia Woolley, Gregg Perry, and Howard Shapiro. 7:30 pm, Kilauea Military Camp Theater in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. $15 adults / $13 seniors 65 & up or children 12 & under ($2 more at the door). June 28-29 - Pu`uhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park Establishment Day Cultural Festival. Join Leilehua and many of Hawai`i's knowledgable traditional artists, artisans, and cultural practitioners in this two-day festival of Hawaiian arts and culture. The event opens Saturday with the Processional of the Royal Court, and closes Sunday with the Royal Recessional. Learn to craft a kāhili, an ipu heke-ole, and participate in many games and activities. Pu`uhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park.
