Spring Celebration of Hawaiian Culture
Saturday, April 14, 8:00-2:00
Pu`uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park

On Saturday, April 14, Halau Hula Namohala Hala`i presents A Spring Celebration of Hawaiian Culture with George Kahumoku Jr.,  Jesse Colin Young, and Leilehua Yuen at Pu`uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park.
The day begins at 8:00 a.m. with Yuen giving an opening chant and prayer at the Royal Canoe Landing. Following, there will be displays of traditional lei, and lei making demoonstrations in the Royal Grounds as the halau members learn to make these fresh ornaments for their costumes.
At 10:00 at the park picnic area, Kahumoku and the halau members will hold "slack key on the beach," where park visitors can observe the training which goes into making a Hawaiian musician.
At 1:00 pm, Leilehua Yuen and Halau Hula Na Mohala Hala`i will move to the park amphitheater and adorn themselves with their freshly made lei to give a demonstration of ancient Hawaiian dance.
After the hula kahiko demonstration, George Kahumoku, Jr. and Jesse Colin Young will share some of their favorite Hawaiian songs, with Leilehua Yuen dancing.
The mini-concert is free and open to all park visitors, and is sponsored by Halau Hula Na Mohala Hala`i.

The workshop fees for halau members are $40 without concert ticket and $50 with ticket. Spring Concert with
George Kahumoku, Jr.
and
Jesse Colin Young
Saturday, April 14, 7:30 pm
Aloha Theater, Kainaliu-Kona

Hawaiian slack key guitar master George Kahumoku Jr. will present a Spring Concert at Kona's Aloha Theater on Easter Eve - Saturday, April 14, at 7:30 pm with son Keoki and Jesse Colin Young. Halau Hula Na Mohala Hala`i, under the direction of Leilehua Yuen, will open with a short hula presentation.
Kahumoku is known for his relaxed "home-style" concerts. A seasoned trouper, George has performed for audiences all over the world, including such dignitaries at the Queen of England and the Premier of China.  He says that while walking out on the stage he knows he doesn't get to be with those people out there for very long, so he relaxes, has a great time, and gives them everything he can.
His son Keoki is a slack key musician in his own right, and is also well known for his prowess on the `ukulele. The two Kahumokus often perform together.
Jesse Colin Young has delighted Ka Moku Hawai`i audiences with his music since moving here to farm coffee. On this night, he will expand the delight by treating the audience to his new and never recorded slack key melodies.
Leilehua Yuen is an instuctor of Hawaiian culture and arts, including hula, and frequently gives demonstrations in Hawaii's parks. She has performed on the Mainland, in Europe, and in China.
Tickets are $20 pre-sale and $23 at the door. The concert is a fundraiser for Kona Pacific Waldorf School and Halau Hula Na Mohala Hala`i.
